ISO For Energy Management, Green Buildings In The Works

Deputy Minister of Development Dato Paduka Hj Ali Hj Apong made the announcement in his keynote speech yesterday at the conference on alternative energy and energy efficiency.
He said the ministry is focusing on efforts in energy efficiency and conservation strategies in building design and construction which represents a major proportion of prime energy consumed and emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
"The implementation of ISO 50001 in Energy Management Systems is expected to address effective organisational management of energy resource and performance in aceordance to relevant global standards. It is expected to be released by the end of 2010," said the deputy minister.
ISO 50001 will establish an international framework for industrial plants or entire companies to manage all aspects of energy, including procurement and use.
The standard will provide organisations and companies with technical and management strategies to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs, and improve environmental performance.
It is expected to cover relevant terminology, measurement and metrics including measuring and reporting on their carbon emissions.
The deputy minister added that the ministry will also begin to embark on ISO 15392 in Sustainability in Building Construction which focuses on the concept of sustainable development applied to the life cycle of buildings and other construction works from their inception to its completion.
"It is high time our own professionals look at energy efficient technologies and an integrated building management that controls energy usage and eliminate energy wastage throughout the life eyele of the buildings."
"Government buildings should also lead by example by using construction materials that consume less energy and support sustainability to our environment," he added.
In addition, the deputy minister said that the "Piawaian Brunei Darossalam" or PBD 12:2008, a standard issued and published by the ministry on building guidelines and requirements will also be reviewed if agreed by all those involved.
The standard will address requirements on energy efficiency guidelines on building design and construction.
"The ministry is constantly challenged with demands by stakeholders to improve our services at every level and our own expectations to be the best at what we do whilst meeting the demands of international standards," Dam Hj Ali said.
